Understanding Destination Wedding Insurance

When a celebration spans multiple days, multiple vendors, and multiple locations, the investment behind it is significant. Not just financially, but in time, in decision-making, in the months of coordination that precede a single weekend. Destination wedding insurance is not a precaution for people who expect things to go wrong. It is a structural decision made by people who understand what they have built.
At Jennifer Buono Events, we require liability coverage as a condition of every engagement and walk each client through the full landscape of available protections early in the planning process. What follows is a clear account of what the coverage categories mean, when they apply, and how to evaluate them.

When planning a multi-day destination celebration, every decision carries weight, and the right protection is part of that. Destination wedding insurance isn’t about expecting something to go wrong; it’s about safeguarding the time, energy, and investment behind an extraordinary weekend. At  we require liability coverage and help our clients navigate optional protections like cancellation insurance, so nothing important is left to chance.

Destination wedding insurance typically includes two core types of protection: liability coverage for on-site incidents and cancellation insurance for unexpected disruptions. Depending on where you’re hosting your event—whether it’s in Mexico, the Caribbean, or closer to home—the type of coverage you choose matters. Below, we break down what each policy covers, what it doesn’t, and why thoughtful protection is part of luxury-level planning.

Event Liability Insurance

Covers: Guest injuries, property damage, venue requirements

This is the type of insurance that venues almost always require. It protects against third-party claims for bodily injury or property damage during your event.

Venues require it. We require it. And the reason is straightforward: a multi-day celebration involves hundreds of guests, significant rental inventory, and activity across spaces that are not your own. Event liability insurance covers third-party claims for bodily injury or property damage during your event — a guest injury, a damaged floor, an incident involving alcohol service.
What to know before purchasing:
We require all clients to list Jennifer Buono Events as an additionally insured party on their policy. This is standard practice for any professional firm operating at this level and should be expected by any planner or production company you work with.
Liability insurance does not cover weather-related cancellations, vendor non-performance, or venue bankruptcy. Those require a separate category of coverage.
If alcohol is being served, which it will be, confirm whether your venue requires a liquor liability endorsement. Requirements vary by state and by venue contract.

Example scenarios

  • A guest trips and needs medical attention.

  • A rental piece damages the venue’s flooring.

What you need to know

  • We require all clients to list Jennifer Buono Events as an additionally insured.

  • It does not cover weather-related cancellations, vendor no-shows, or bankruptcy.

  • If alcohol is involved, a liquor liability add-on may be required based on venue/state guidelines.

Event Cancellation or Postponement Insurance

Covers: Major disruptions like severe weather, illness, or venue closure

For families planning destination celebrations in Florida, the Caribbean, or Mexico, this is not optional coverage. It is a reasonable response to the geography.
Hurricane season runs June through November. In that window, a storm can close airports, delay freight, force venue evacuations, and, as we’ve experienced firsthand, require a complete relocation of a multi-day wedding with 48 hours of notice. The couples who navigate those situations with the least disruption are the ones who made this decision months earlier, when the sky was clear.
Cancellation and postponement insurance reimburses non-refundable expenses when an event must be canceled or postponed due to covered causes: severe weather, sudden illness or injury in the immediate family, venue closure or bankruptcy.

Cancellation/Postponement Scenario Examples

  • Hurricane or severe weather prevents your wedding.

  • Sudden illness or injury in the immediate family.

  • Venue closure or bankruptcy before your event.

What to Know Before Purchasing

Most policies must be purchased 30 to 60 days before the event date, and some providers allow earlier enrollment. For multi-day events, confirm that coverage extends across all event days, not only the ceremony date.
If your vendor contracts include non-refundable deposits, which most do at this level, confirm that the policy covers vendor non-performance and deposit recovery, not only weather-related cancellations.
  • Many providers (like BriteCo) reimburse lost deposits and rebooking costs, including vendor no-shows.

  • Cancellation policies must generally be purchased 30–60 days before your event—some providers start coverage even earlier.

  • If you need ultra-flexible protection (like change-of-heart cancellation or vendor failure options), confirm and customize your policy accordingly.

Custom Coverage Options for Multi-Day Events

Standard wedding insurance policies are written for single-day events. A multi-day destination celebration — welcome dinner, ceremony, reception, farewell brunch — is a different category of event and requires a policy that reflects that.
When evaluating providers, confirm coverage for: all event days listed in your vendor contracts, rehearsal dinners and ancillary events, gifts and specialty décor, and host liquor liability across all service periods.
A private insurance broker who works with high-net-worth clients can often structure a policy that integrates with existing umbrella coverage, which is worth exploring if your family already maintains that kind of portfolio.

Depending on provider and policy level, you may include coverage for:

  • Gifts, décor, attire, or photography materials

  • Liability for rehearsal dinners and multiple event days

  • Alcohol-related incidents (host liquor liability)

  • BriteCo offers these elements in their structured packages—for example, zero-deductible liability, standard vendor no-show protections, and 5-day liability coverage.

Why It Matters

We’ve seen firsthand how the right coverage can protect more than just a date—it preserves the intention behind a weekend. One of our destination weddings was postponed due to an unexpected hurricane just days before guests were set to travel.

Because the couple had secured comprehensive destination wedding insurance, we were able to navigate the reschedule with clarity, care, and minimal financial loss. Our ability to reimagine the celebration was rooted not only in smart planning, but in the trust they placed in their coverage.

You can explore how we approach complex, multi-day weddings through our portfolio and see how flexibility, foresight, and design integrity work together.

Jennifer’s Perspective

Liability coverage is a condition of every engagement we accept. Cancellation coverage is something we recommend strongly for any event planned during hurricane season or in a location where weather, travel, or venue logistics carry real risk — which describes most of the destinations we work in. Policy deadlines are tracked as part of our planning process and flagged well in advance of the purchase window.
The goal is not to plan for failure. It is to ensure that if circumstances change, the decision about how to respond belongs to the family, not to the financial exposure of the moment.

Destination Weddings Abroad

If you’re hosting your celebration in Mexico, the Caribbean, or another international destination, it’s essential to confirm whether your policy extends abroad. We recommend working with a private insurance broker for tailored international coverage, or confirming with your planner which options align with your location.

Liability and cancellation coverage, we recommend exploring WedSafe, Wedsure, or Markel Insurance.
For clients needing a quick COI or venue-specific compliance, The Event Helper is a helpful resource.
BriteCo offers modern options worth considering, or we recommend working with a private insurance broker.
